Edge Booster
This project was an advertisement design where we were given the freedom to promote anything we wanted. I decided to promote Edge Booster after a class discussion about using Pinterest as an additional source for finding images. While searching for inspiration, I noticed that it could be difficult to find diverse images of people using hair products, which led me to the idea of creating an advertisement for a hair care product. My main inspiration came from an image of a Black woman wearing grillz and sunglasses while holding stacks of bread up to her face, similar to how someone might pose with stacks of money. I wanted to recreate that same confident attitude, but replace the money with a container of Edge Booster. From there, I sketched out how I wanted the woman to look before creating the illustration digitally using Procreate and Photoshop, with InDesign being the main program I used to build the final layout. I chose rich, subtle colours to give the advertisement a polished look and used bold typography to make the main message stand out. I also incorporated a serif typeface to connect the design to curly hair and its texture. The phrase “Secure the Bag” became the main concept, with “Secure the Edges” connecting the money-inspired idea back to the purpose of the product. One of my biggest challenges was figuring out how to arrange the text within the layout while keeping everything balanced. My grid also wasn’t snapping properly, which made aligning the text more difficult. Working through these challenges helped me become more comfortable with developing an idea from a reference, creating my own imagery, and building a complete advertisement layout.
